It is said that the Japanese government has extended the state of emergency and the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics will close long-established restaurants in Tokyo for more than 40 years.
I also hear that many other stores have been forced out of business due to the coronavirus.
This is probably the result of not being able to keep up with the unexpected and sudden changes in the environment.
In particular, if a person continues to live a rich and stable life in a certain environment for a long time, he or she tends to strengthen and stick to the system, and neglects the spirit of reform in case of emergency.
We human beings live in a stable environment with some control over nature.
However, when we encounter an unexpected environmental change such as a coronavirus, we, who have become accustomed to the blessed environment, do not have the strength to survive it.
Of course, as living things, we are losing the wild ability to respond to any changes in the environment, but we are making up for that loss with our intelligence-based communication skills and technology.
Therefore, it can be said that human beings have acquired civilization instead of abandoning the viability that each person originally possessed.
Inevitably, in order for us to survive, it is essential that each and every one of us interdependence with the specific environment of communities such as families, companies, local governments, and nations.
On the other hand, in the case of us artists, no matter how the environment surrounding us changes, we will be prepared to continue our creative activities, and we should be able to do so.
Not a few artists may think, "The environment has changed and I can't get the materials I use all the time."
They depend on the material.
You can find as many motifs and materials as you like by observing the environment in which you are placed.
Paints, cameras, clay, etc. are means, and if the purpose of creation is clear, there is no need to rely on specific means.
Also, one might say, "I lose the foundation of my life because I have no place to publish my work." If so, the person depends on "the purpose of the work is to earn a living."
Another artist might say, "If I don't belong to a group, I'm lonely. It's easy for a group to apply for help from the government."
That is because the person depends on the power of the group, and in return he is bound by the rules of the group.
The ability of a person to adapt to changes in the environment is not dependent on the environment.
Rather, it will put the environment on your side.
It's all about discovering and embracing other possibilities in the environment in front of us, without being bound by any convention.
If an artist cannot create without being in a special environment, he cannot be said to be truly free to express.
Isn't it possible to express independently and freely only after being released from dependence on a specific environment?
日本政府が緊急事態宣言を延長したのと、東京オリンピックの延期によって、東京で４０年以上の老舗レストランが閉店するという。
また他にもコロナウイルスによって廃業に追い込まれた店が多いと聞く。
予期しなかった急激な環境変化について行けなかった結果だろう。
特に、人はある環境の下で豊かで安定した生活を長く続けてしまうと、そのシステムを強化固持してしまう傾向にあって、いざという時に備えての改革の精神を怠る。
私たち人類は、自然をある程度コントロールして、安定した環境の中で暮らしている。
しかし、いざコロナウイルスのような思っても見なかった環境変化に遭遇すると、それまでの恵まれた環境に慣れきってしまっている私たちは、それを生き抜くだけのたくましさはない。
勿論私たちは生物として、どんな環境の変化に対応できるだけの野生の能力を失いつつあるが、その分、知力を基盤にしたコミュニケーション能力やテクノロジーでその損失を補っている。
だから、人間は、一人一人が本来備えていた生存能力を放棄する代わりに文明を手に入れたといってよい。
必然的に私たちが生きて行く為には、一人一人が、家族や会社、地方自治体、国家などのコミュニティーという特定の環境との相互依存が不可欠だ。
一方で、私たちアーティストの場合、どんなに私たちを取り巻く環境が変わっても、私たちには創造活動を続けていく覚悟が居るだろうし、またそれが可能なはずだ。
少なからずのアーティストは「環境が変わったので、いつも使っている材料が手に入らない。」と思うかもしれない。
その人達は材料に依存している。
自分たちが置かれた環境を観察すればいくらでもモチーフや材料は見つかる。
絵の具やカメラや粘土などは手段であって、創造の目的がはっきりしていれば特定の手段に依存する必要はない。
また、ある人は「私の作品を発表する場がないので、私は生活の基盤を失う。」と言うかもしれない。そうだとすればその人は「作品制作の目的が生活の糧を得る為」に依存している。
また、別のアーティストは「私が集団に属していないと、一人で心細い。団体は行政にも援助の申請がし易い。」と言うかもしれない。
それはその人が集団の力に依存しているからで、その対価として集団のルールに拘束される。
ある人が環境の変化に適応できることは、環境に依存することではない。
むしろ環境を自分の味方に付けることだろう。
それはとりもなおさず、どんな慣習にも囚われず、常に私たちの眼前の環境から別の可能性を見つけ出し、取り入れることだ。
アーティストが、ある特殊な環境に居ないと創作出来ないのであれば、その人は本当の自由な表現をしているとは言えない。
特定の環境への依存から開放されて初めて独立した自由な表現が出来るのではないか？
