The pond was gone.

It was certainly full of water until yesterday, and ducks were swimming around.

``Uncle Duck,'' who comes every morning at 8 a.m. with his dog Toby to feed the ducks bread, told me that the city drains the water every year.

I was shocked as I had never been to Madrid this season before.

But is the pond really gone?

it's not. Until now, I had only thought it was a pond.

We just took it for granted that there was a pond and didn't see it for what it really was.

This coronavirus has wiped out people from the city. Didn't this reveal for the first time the true nature of what a "city" should be?

We may only become acutely aware of the existence of things (and people) once they are gone.

Last week, world-renowned artist Christo passed away. He packed museums, bridges, coasts, valleys and so on.

The familiar scenery changes, and for the first time people begin to look for what was hidden.

The same goes for the Great Buddha of Bamiyan, which was destroyed and disappeared by the Taliban in 2001.

As if the Buddha had shattered itself and sacrificed itself, the world had finally come to take an interest in the oppressed and starving people of Afghanistan.

Japanese people sometimes use the word ``love'' for the word ``sad.''

It would mean, ``We love it so much that we would be sad if we lost it.''

I wish we could have a feeling of love for everything before we lose it.

池が消えていた。 確かに昨日まで満々と水をたたえ、鴨達がが泳いでいた。 毎朝８時に愛犬トビーを連れて、鴨にパンをあげに来る「カモおじさん」は、「毎年水を抜いているんだよ」と何でもなさそうに教えてくれた。 この季節にマドリッドにいない私にはショックだったのだ。

しかし池は本当に消えたのか？

そうではない。いままで、池と思っていただけだったのだ。「池」があるのが当たり前として、そのありのままの姿を見ていなかっただけなのだ。

今回のコロナウイルスは街から人を消し去った。そのことで、初めて「街」があるべき本来の姿を現したではないか。

私たちは、モノ（人も）がなくなって初めて強くその存在に気づかされるのかも知れない。

先週、世界的アーティスト、クリストが亡くなった。彼は美術館、橋、海岸、谷など様々なものをすっぽりと梱包して行った。

それまで見慣れていた風景が変わり、人々は初めて隠されたモノが何であったかを探し始める。

２００１年、ターリバーンによっては破壊され消滅したバーミヤーンの大仏も同じだ。 あたかも、大仏が自ら砕けちり、身を捧げることによって、世界は初めてアフガニスタンの虐げられ餓死に瀕している人々に、関心を持つようになったのではないか。

日本人「悲しい」という言葉に「愛」の字を使うこともある。「私たちは、もしそれを失ったら悲しくなってしまう程それを愛している」ということだろう。

私たちは、失くなる前に、全てに対してこの気持ちが持てないものだろうか。
