"Sistine Chapel ceiling" Michelangelo

When I saw Sistine Chapel ceiling of Michelangelo in the Vatican in my twenties, caught my breath.

Seemed to me that it was the best job a person could do, not only in the field of art.

In Florence Michelangelo learned the techniques of sculpture from very early childhood, and in adolescence received education from the giants of knowledge of that time in the academy sponsored by the Medici .

But could one achieve this greatness alone with abundant knowledge and exceptional techniques?

Michelangelo was forced to change places to live and work throughout Italy because of the war.

And in Rome he had to accept the irrational orders that the pope ordered him with the threat of excommunication. So he continued to overcome the problems with pathetic effort, forgetful of his own comforts.

However, each time he solved the problem taking his every possible skills, he grew.

Perhaps the bad condition and intimidation of the Pope that was given to Michelangelo and robbed him of "stability, security", he could have achieved "greatness". The enemy of greatness can be said security and stability.

二十代でこのミケランジェロのシスティナ礼拝堂の天井絵をバチカンで見た時、息を飲んだ。

後にも先にもこうした経験はない。

アートに限らず一人の人間が成し遂げる最も偉大な仕事を目の当たりにしたからだ。

ミケランジェロはフィレンツェで幼少から彫刻をマスターし、十代でメディチ家主催のアカデミーで知の大家達から薫陶を受けた。

しかしその豊富な教養と卓越した技だけでこの偉大さにまで到達できたのか？

ミケランジェロはフランスとイタリアとの戦争に翻弄され、イタリア各地を木の葉のように転々とし、ローマでは法王の無理無体な注文を破門で脅されてやむなく引き受けてた。食事も寝るところも構う間とてなく、絶えず直面しなければならない問題と戦い続けた。

その苦渋は彼の肖像からもよく見て取れる。

だがその問題に持てる全ての能力と最新技術を駆使し解決して行く度に彼は大きく成長していく。

ミケランジェロに与えられた劣悪な環境と法王からの脅迫が「安定、安心」を彼から奪い去ったからこそ「偉大さ」に到達できたのだろう。まさに偉大さの敵はこの安心、安定といえよう。

人はぬるい湯に浸かっている間は中々行動できない。

熱湯か冷水に到って始めてそこから飛び出すことが出来るのだ。環境も社会的条件も格段に良くなっていく現代社会で人類は安定、安心を与えられ、その傾向は益々テクノロジーの発達で加速化されていく。　しかし我々は自ら考え、創ることを止めて、選ぶだけというイージーな生活に慣れてしまってはならない。

要は、この素晴らしいテクノロジーや情報ネットワークをフルに活用して、自分の分野で偉大な仕事を目指すことじゃないか？
